For more than a half century, Murphy Oil Corporation has been an environmental leader in the oil and gas industry. We have a history of meeting and surpassing government environmental standards.
Our environmental initiatives are ongoing. Murphy has developed programs to further minimize our already low emissions and help reduce greenhouse gases. For example, Murphy completed a Clean Fuels initiative at its Meraux, Louisiana refinery in 2003, three years before government regulations went into effect, becoming one of the first U.S. refineries to do so. Murphy became the first U.K. marketer to supply ultra-low-sulfur gasoline to all of its retail outlets in 2000.
In 2008, Murphy created an internal Climate Change Workgroup to strategically address emerging climate change issues. Through this committee, tactical efforts have been implemented to create an Energy Efficiency Forum to identify and address opportunities to increase operating efficiencies and greenhouse gas emission reduction at our refineries. In addition, a Low Carbon Fuel Standard sub-committee was formed in 2009 to monitor, evaluate and develop implementation plans that may arise in state climate change consortiums to legislate fuel standards.
Murphy voluntarily constructed wetlands in the Superior, Wisconsin area at Newton Creek. These wetlands are a valuable resource because they protect and improve water quality, provide fish and wildlife habitats, and maintain surface water flow during dry periods.
In 2009, the Murphy Board of Directors approved a new Worldwide Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Policy. This policy is the result of a collaborative effort by individuals throughout the Murphy enterprise.
Murphy's Worldwide EHS Policy encourages individual responsibility, values quantifiable results and promotes communication of progress. We are committed to protecting the health and safety of our employees, safeguarding the environment and working with our neighborhood communities. Respect for, and adherence to, sound environmental, health and safety practices are an important facet of Murphy's culture and this responsibility is shared by every employee worldwide.
