Community Commitment
Promoting Excellence in Education and Community Spirit

Nowhere is the idea of progress through excellence more evident than in Murphy's wide-ranging, company-wide efforts to strengthen the communities in which it operates. Murphy has carefully, thoughtfully and successfully built partnerships with educational, civic and charitable initiatives in these communities.

Murphy recognizes and applauds the positive impact its employees have in working within their own communities. From volunteering as coaches of youth sports to working at battered women's shelters to serving on city government commissions, school boards, or city and state chambers of commerce, individual Murphy employees give enthusiastically of themselves, and of their time, to strengthen their communities.

Murphy has historically allocated the majority of its contributions to educational institutions and programs. Through its Murphy Lecture Series, high school and college students in the South Arkansas area are exposed to nationally recognized speakers.

The Murphy Education Program, established in 1997 by Claiborne P. Deming, President and CEO of Murphy Oil Corporation, is designed to promote academic excellence in the El Dorado, Arkansas, public school system. The Program provides direct financial awards to students in grades 1 - 12 who score high on standardized tests. Since its inception, $220,000 has been paid to students winning 715 awards.

Claiborne P. Deming was the driving force behind the creation of the El Dorado Education Foundation, a $1.6 million endowment fund established to improve the quality of teaching and learning in El Dorado public schools. Through a partnership with the El Dorado School District, the Foundation has established Chairs in Math, Science, and Foreign Language.

Murphy supports the ongoing educational needs of its employees through an Employee Educational Assistance Program. The program encourages employees interested in extending their knowledge and capability through outside study and participation in educational programs. The Company reimburses the cost of tuition, textbooks and some required fees employees incur at accredited schools, colleges, universities or trade schools.

Employees at all four of Murphy's major U.S. locations teamed up to contribute more than $335,000 to local United Way Campaigns and the Company matched their generosity. Total contributions from Murphy and its employees to local United Way agencies in 2001 was around $700,000.

Murphy is proud to sponsor its own recognition of volunteerism, the Community Spirit Award, held in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana, the location of the Company's Meraux refinery. The event honors a volunteer from either the community at large or from within the Company and includes a $5,000 award to the winner's charity of choice.

Murphy refineries actively support local environmental preservation initiatives such as Community Clean Up Programs and Earth Day activities, raising public awareness of the environmental importance of trees.

In Canada, Murphy has developed a Murphy Oil Scholarship Program, which grants annual awards to the sons and daughters of Murphy employees who meet academic excellence criteria. Murphy's Canadian operations have also been recognized and honored as having one of the highest United Way employee participation levels.
